Food Allergy

Food allergy reactions can be life-threatening, so correct medical diagnosis is vitally important.

If you have a food allergy, your immune system overreacts to a food. Food allergy is more likely to develop in someone who has family members with allergies. Symptoms may occur after you consume even a tiny amount of the food.

The most common food allergens are the proteins in cow’s milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish and tree nuts. In some food groups, especially tree nuts and seafood, an allergy to one member of a food family may result in the person being allergic to other members of the same group. This is known as cross-reactivity.

Symptoms of Allergic Reactions to Foods

  • hives
  • swollen eyes, lips, tongue and throat
  • stomach pain, cramping
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • runny or blocked nose
  • sneezing
  • coughing
  • wheezy breathing
  • hoarse voice
  • lethargy
  • dizziness
  • fainting
  • anaphylaxis

Severe Allergic Reactions (Anaphylaxis)

Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that happens very quickly. Without immediate treatment anaphylaxis can be fatal. Symptoms of anaphylaxis may include difficulty breathing, dizziness or loss of consciousness. If you have any of these symptoms, particularly after eating, seek medical care immediately (call 000). Don’t wait to see if your symptoms go away or get better on their own.

Many people who think they are allergic to a food may actually be intolerant to it. Some of the symptoms of food intolerance and food allergy are similar, but the differences between the two are very important. Distinguishing between these requires careful medical diagnosis. Food allergy reactions can be life-threatening, so correct medical diagnosis is vitally important and a thorough management plan is vital.

Unorthodox testing methods (Vega, Alcat, Kinesiology, Bryan’s, Iridology, Allergy elimination techniques and Pulse) are not recognised as accurate or reliable. These techniques often result in false diagnosis, and treatments that are neither required nor proven effective. In food allergy, incorrect diagnosis and treatment can have serious consequences. The Federal Court has imposed heavy penalties against some companies and individuals for making false claims and misleading consumers about their allergy testing and treatment procedures.
